Sluggish kidneys that do not efficiently convert vitamin D to its usable form can lead to a vitamin D deficiency. This is the case more often in the elderly where the kidneys are not as effective as they were in younger years.
Olive or dark colored skin. The melanin pigment in the skin reduces its ability to convert sunlight to vitamin D. Some believe that the elderly with darker skin have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency.
Sluggish digestive tract that’s unable to properly absorb Vitamin D. Several conditions such as celiac disease, crohn’s disease and cystic fibrosis can all affect your intestine’s from absorbing vitamin D from the food you ingest.
Obesity. The body pulls vitamin D from the blood by means of fat cells. This is why those with a body mass index of 30 or higher generally have a vitamin D deficiency.
