The Health Benefits of Melatonin Include Sleeping and Anti-Aging!
Start Sleeping Like A Baby Again! The Many Health Benefits of Melatonin.
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland which is located above the midsection of the brain. The human body has an internal clock that not only controls how much melatonin it generates but also the natural sleep cycle which requires us to wake up in the morning and sleep through the night.

Typically, melatonin levels elevate in the evening and remain that way through the night for the most part, dropping as the morning hours arrive. Light also affects the amount of melatonin your body generates. During the short winter days the body’s internal clock is known to shift, producing melatonin either earlier in the morning or later in the day. These subtle changes often result in winter depression, with the medical term being Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
The levels of melatonin produced during the night vary from person to person, however it is to some degree related to age. Typically children secrete more melatonin than adults, and the levels drop as we age, with some elderly adults producing only a minimal amount and in some cases, none at all.
When should you take a melatonin supplement?
Melatonin supplements are used to help with several sleep problems including insomnia and jet lag, and research continues to find other uses for melatonin including the following:
* Helps with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
* Helps manage sleep patterns for individuals who work nights.
* Helps reduce or eliminate sleeping issues due to disorientation after surgery.
* Helps minimize persistent cluster headaches.
Some believe that due to the powerful antioxidant effect of melatonin, it may help slow or even stop the spread of cancer, boost the immune system and even significantly slow the aging process making it a “must have” for anyone on an anti-aging program!
In addition, Melatonin is being studied to find out if it could possibly help blind people address their sleeping issues which they list as being one of the most challenging aspects of their impairment. Because they can’t see light which regulates melatonin, they often have trouble sleeping, throwing their body’s internal clock off.
Are melatonin supplements safe?
Melatonin supplements are marketed as having a number of health benefits, and several studies support many of the reported benefits which include helping relieve sleep issues, reducing symptoms of Tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder), helping individuals quit smoking, and increasing low blood platelet counts.* Melatonin supplments are generally regarded as safe, however as with any dietary supplement, it’s always recommended that you consult with your heath care provider before taking any supplement including melatonin, particularly for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant. In addition, melatonin may not be suitable for children under the age of 18.
